Chandigarh: Amritsar police have registered a case against four doctors of Fortis Hospital in connection with the death of international bodybuilder Varinder Ghuman during a surgery last year.
Ghuman died on October 9, 2025, at a private hospital in Amritsar. His family had alleged serious medical negligence on the part of the hospital authorities following the incident.
Based on these allegations, the district administration constituted a Special Investigation Team (SIT) comprising expert doctors. The SIT recently submitted its report, concluding that Ghuman’s death occurred due to negligence during the surgical procedure.
Following the findings, Amritsar police have registered an FIR under relevant provisions, including Section 106(1) of the Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita (BNS), against four senior doctors of the hospital.
Those named in the FIR include orthopaedic surgeon Dr Tapish Shukla, anaesthesia consultant Dr Alka Tiwari, head of the anaesthesia department Dr Rajendra Kaur, and cardiology consultant Dr Arun Kumar Chopra.
Police officials said further investigation is underway and appropriate action will be taken based on evidence gathered in the case.
