Chandigarh: The Bathinda court has dealt a setback to BJP MP from Mandi and Bollywood actor Kangana Ranaut by rejecting her plea seeking exemption from personal appearance in a defamation case.
The court has directed her to appear in person on January 15, warning that a warrant may be issued if she fails to do so.
The case dates back to 2021 during the farmers’ protest. Kangana had tweeted about an elderly woman farmer, Mahinder Kaur, a resident of Bahadurgarh Jandian village in Bathinda, claiming she was participating in the protest for Rs 100. Following the tweet, Mahinder Kaur filed a defamation case against her.
Kangana had argued that she merely reposted a post shared by a lawyer. However, two months ago, she appeared before the Bathinda court and apologised for the tweet related to the elderly woman farmer.
