Beware of ‘Happy New Year’ messages, Punjab Police issue cyber alert

Chandigarh: Punjab Police have issued a cyber alert warning people to remain cautious while clicking on “Happy New Year” messages received on their mobile phones. Officials said hackers are using festive greetings as a cover to send malicious links and files which can lead to mobile phones being hacked.

According to the cyber cell, clicking on unverified messages or links can give hackers access to personal data, banking details and even OTPs stored on the phone. Police said hackers actively look for such opportunities during festivals when people receive a large volume of messages and may click on them without checking the source.

Cyber cell officers said fake messages are often mixed in with genuine greetings, increasing the chances of users accidentally opening malicious links. Once clicked, the phone can be compromised within minutes.

Police have advised the public not to click on any message, link or file without proper verification. They have also warned against downloading photos or videos received from unknown numbers.

The Ludhiana cyber cell said hackers become particularly active during festivals. Several cases of mobile phones being hacked were reported during Diwali as well, prompting police to issue an advance warning ahead of New Year celebrations.

Officials added that people often share digital greeting cards, video links and surprise messages during festivals. Hackers create similar-looking links to trick users into opening them.

How hackers gain access to mobile phones

APK files: Installing APK files sent through WhatsApp or other messaging apps can give hackers full control of the device.

Fake links: Clicking on fraudulent links can open fake websites designed to steal login credentials and banking details.

Spyware and malware: Once installed, these apps can access calls, messages, photos and OTPs stored on the phone.
