Chandigarh: Former Punjab minister Laljit Singh Bhullar was on Tuesday sent to five-day police remand by a local court in connection with the alleged suicide of warehousing officer Gagandeep Singh Randhawa.
Police had sought seven days of remand for further questioning, but the court granted five days after hearing arguments from both sides.
Bhullar, who was arrested from Mandi Gobindgarh a day earlier, was produced before the court amid heavy security and the presence of his supporters.
Meanwhile, Randhawa’s last rites were performed on Monday evening after the postmortem was conducted under the supervision of an executive magistrate. His body was brought home in the afternoon and later cremated at a cremation ground near Durgiana Temple in Amritsar, where his son performed the final rites.
Randhawa, a district manager with the Punjab Warehousing Corporation, had allegedly consumed a poisonous substance before his death, leading to a major political controversy in the state.
The case continues to remain under investigation as police proceed with the custodial interrogation of the accused.
