Brother-in-law arrested in Canada’s Delta town murder of Punjabi woman

Toronto: Delta Police in Canada have arrested the brother-in-law of Mandeep Kaur Khaira, whose charred body was found in a burnt car on Highway 17 near 70th Street in Delta about a month ago.

The accused has been identified as 24-year-old Gurjot Singh Khaira, a resident of Surrey. He has been charged with second-degree murder and is scheduled to appear in court on December 11.

According to initial information, the victim earlier lived in Edmonton before moving to Surrey after her marriage. Mandeep Kaur, originally from Gujarwal village in Ludhiana district, was married into a family from Lodhiwal village near Sidhwan Bet.

Police said they had received a fire report last month, following which officers discovered a burnt vehicle with the woman’s body inside.

After her cremation in Surrey on November 6, the family learned through local police that Gurjot Singh had allegedly moved Mandeep’s body from one location to another. This led to a formal case against him.

On Friday, Mandeep’s father Jagdev Singh Jaggi, who lives in another part of Canada, returned with his daughter’s ashes and was informed that she had been murdered.

Jaggi said he was relieved that the Canadian police followed their suspicion, adding that without their investigation, the family would never have known the truth behind his daughter’s death.
