New Delhi: Finance Minister Nirmala Sitharaman on Sunday presented the Union Budget 2026–27, announcing several measures with a direct impact on household expenses. While the budget offers significant relief in healthcare, technology and green energy, prices of certain items are set to rise.
Items set to become cheaper
Major relief in healthcare:
The finance minister announced that 17 medicines used in cancer treatment will become cheaper. In addition, prices of medicines for diabetes and seven other serious diseases will also be reduced, providing relief to patients and their families.
Technology and gadgets:
Prices of mobile phone batteries, ovens and footwear are expected to come down following duty rationalisation.
Green energy:
Solar panels and equipment linked to solar energy will become cheaper, aimed at boosting renewable energy adoption.
Fuel and travel:
Prices of CNG and biogas are set to decline. The budget also brings major relief for overseas travellers, with foreign travel becoming cheaper than before.
Items set to become costlier
Alcohol:
The budget has proposed an increase in prices of alcoholic beverages.
Scrap and minerals:
Scrap material and mineral products will become more expensive due to changes in duties.
The finance minister said customs duty on several medical devices and medicines has been reduced to bring down the cost of treatment for the common man, underlining the government’s focus on affordable healthcare in the new financial year.
