Bullock cart races set to return to Kila Raipur Rural Olympics after 11 years

Ludhiana: Bullock cart races are set to make a comeback at the Kila Raipur Rural Olympics in Ludhiana after an 11-year hiatus, provided there are no fresh legal hurdles before the event begins.

The iconic races, once the main attraction of the Kila Raipur Games, are scheduled to be held between January 30 and February 1. The district administration, organisers and villagers have expressed enthusiasm over the revival. Deputy commissioner Himanshu Jain is expected to address the issue at a press conference later on Friday.

The bullock cart races were banned in 2014 following directions from the Supreme Court of India, dealing a major blow to the popularity of the rural sports festival. With the suspension of the races, footfall by tourists from India and abroad had dropped sharply, organisers said.

The revival became possible after the Punjab government passed a Bill in the Assembly on July 11, clearing the way for the resumption of bullock cart racing under regulated conditions. The state government has been organising the Kila Raipur Games in recent years, but without the signature event.

Strict guidelines to be followed

According to officials, a set of safeguards will be enforced to ensure animal welfare:

All bulls will undergo mandatory veterinary checks before the race

Veterinary teams will remain present during and after the event

Any form of beating, use of sharp objects or cruelty will be strictly prohibited

Races will not be held during extreme heat or adverse weather conditions

Prior registration of all participants and animals will be mandatory

Violations will invite strict action and possible bans

Organisers said the return of bullock cart races is expected to restore the traditional charm of the Kila Raipur Rural Olympics, often described as Punjab’s “mini Olympics,” while adhering to legal and welfare norms.
