CHANDIGARH: Former Punjab chief minister and senior BJP leader Captain Amarinder Singh on Friday rejected Navjot Kaur Sidhu’s claim that the chief minister’s post was offered for Rs 500 crore, calling her remarks “indiscipline” and a “bundle of lies”.
Reacting after Punjab Congress president Amarinder Singh Raja Warring suspended Navjot Kaur Sidhu, Captain Amarinder said in an interview with a news agency that the Sidhu couple was “mentally unstable”.
He said their statements should not be taken seriously.
Captain Amarinder joined several leaders in publicly dismissing Navjot Kaur Sidhu’s allegations. He said Navjot Singh Sidhu had been given multiple opportunities during his tenure, including important portfolios, but continued to complain.
“He was given two portfolios and later even the power department, yet he resigned and never took responsibility,” Captain Amarinder said. He added that Sidhu’s files remained pending for months and claimed he was not suitable for the position.
Punjab BJP president Sunil Jakhar also targeted the Congress, alleging corruption within the party. Jakhar said he had heard that the chief minister’s post was “sold for Rs 350 crore”, referring to the appointment of Charanjit Singh Channi as chief minister in September 2021 after Captain Amarinder Singh stepped down.
It may be recalled that Navjot Singh Sidhu had resigned from Captain Amarinder Singh’s cabinet earlier, citing serious differences over policy decisions and governance.
