Case registered in Mumbai over AI-generated video showing Sri Harmandir Sahib collapse

Mumbai: Mumbai Police have registered a case against a fabricated video created using artificial intelligence (AI) that depicted Sri Harmandir Sahib, the holiest shrine of Sikhism, collapsing into water. Sikh leaders said the video has deeply hurt the sentiments of the Sikh community in India and abroad.

The FIR, numbered 30/25, has been filed at the Model Cyber Police Station, Mumbai, on the complaint of local resident Gursewak Singh. Police have invoked Section 299 R/W of the Indian Penal Code, along with provisions of the IT Act, including Section 67. Action has been initiated in the matter.

Bhai Jaspal Singh Sidhu, head of Maharashtra Sikh Samaj, and Charandeep Singh Happy, member of the State Minorities Commission, met Maharashtra Cyber Department Special IG Yashasvi Yadav regarding the incident. They said the IG assured them that the investigation would be conducted fairly and those responsible for insulting Sri Harmandir Sahib would be brought to justice.

Sidhu, who also leads the Maharashtra Sikh Samaj Coordination Committee, expressed regret over the increasing spread of misleading AI-generated digital content. “Sri Darbar Sahib is not just a building but a spiritual centre of Sikhism. To show it in an imagined catastrophe is nothing short of religious violence,” he said.

Earlier, the management of Sri Harmandir Sahib had also lodged a complaint against the video.
