New Delhi: The Central Board of Secondary Education (CBSE) has amended its affiliation rules, making it mandatory for schools to install CCTV cameras equipped with real-time audio-visual recording in all areas except toilets and washrooms.

CBSE Secretary Himanshu Gupta said that ensuring the safety of students is one of the biggest responsibilities of schools.

“It is also the duty of the school to ensure a safe and harmonious ecosystem for the students. There are two aspects of security: protection from anti-social elements and protection for the overall well-being of children with reference to bullying and other indirect threats. All such possibilities can be prevented with a vigilant and sensitive staff and the use of the latest technology,” he said.

To strengthen safety measures, the board has amended Chapter 4 (Physical Infrastructure) of the Affiliation By-Laws, 2018, to include a clause mandating CCTV installation in schools.

“The school should install high-resolution CCTV cameras with audio-visual facilities in all entry and exit points, lobbies, corridors, staircases, all classrooms, laboratories, libraries, canteen areas, store rooms, playgrounds, and other common areas except toilets and washrooms, with real-time audio recording,” Gupta said.
