Chandigarh: Twelve companies of central forces have been deployed for the Tarn Taran assembly by-election in Punjab, scheduled for November 11. The Election Commission said this is the first time that central forces have been deployed for a by-election in the state.
Out of the total polling booths, 100 have been identified as sensitive, while 114 booths will be manned by central security personnel. Punjab Chief Electoral Officer Sibin C said CCTV cameras and webcasting arrangements have been made at all polling stations to ensure smooth and transparent voting.
Campaigning for the Tarn Taran by-election will end at 6 pm today. Liquor shops will remain closed, and all external leaders have been directed to leave the constituency. Around 1.92 lakh voters are eligible to cast their votes. The district will observe a government holiday on polling day.
Meanwhile, former Banga MLA Tarlochan Singh Sundh passed away in Tarn Taran yesterday. The Election Commission also removed SSP Ravjot Grewal and appointed Surinder Lamba as the new district police chief.
