Chandigarh: The Centre has granted sanction to prosecute 1988-batch IAS officer VK Janjua in a corruption case, paving the way for legal proceedings against the senior bureaucrat.
The move comes nearly three months after the Punjab and Haryana high court pulled up the Aam Aadmi Party-led government headed by Bhagwant Mann over the matter.
Janjua served as Punjab’s chief secretary for about a year in 2022. Though he is not the first chief secretary in the state to face corruption allegations, he had risen to the top bureaucratic post despite a pending vigilance case.
After retiring in 2023, Janjua was appointed chairman of the Punjab Transparency and Accountability Commission by the state government.
With the Centre’s approval now in place, investigating agencies can proceed under the relevant provisions of anti-corruption laws. Further legal action in the case is expected in the coming weeks.
