Centre to introduce Constitution Amendment Bill for removal of PM, CMs and ministers facing serious charges

New Delhi: The Centre will introduce the Constitution (133rd Amendment) Bill, 2025 in Parliament today, aimed at providing a legal framework for the removal of the Prime Minister, Union Ministers, Chief Ministers and Ministers of State in cases where they face detention for 30 consecutive days for offences punishable with imprisonment of five years or more.

The bill seeks to amend Articles 75, 164 and 239AA of the Constitution to enable the disqualification of the Prime Minister or a Minister of the Union Council of Ministers, Chief Ministers or Ministers of states, as well as ministers in the National Capital Territory of Delhi, under such circumstances.

Union Home Minister Amit Shah will also introduce two other related legislations — the Union Territory Government (Amendment) Bill, 2025, which aims to bring uniform provisions across Union Territories, and the Jammu and Kashmir Reorganisation (Amendment) Bill, 2025, which proposes provisions for the removal of Chief Ministers and Ministers under the jurisdiction of the Union Territory.
