Chandigarh court awards life term to man for killing two sisters on Raksha Bandhan

Chandigarh: A district court in Chandigarh on Monday sentenced Kuldeep Singh, a resident of Zirakpur, to life imprisonment for the murder of two real sisters in Sector 22 on Raksha Bandhan in 2019.

The court had convicted Kuldeep Singh a day earlier in the double murder case. He is the son of a retired Chandigarh Police inspector.

According to the prosecution, Kuldeep killed Manpreet Kaur after she refused to marry him and had begun distancing herself. Rajwant Kaur, Manpreet’s sister, was also stabbed to death when she tried to save her sibling.

Police investigations and court records revealed that Kuldeep had known Manpreet for nearly 10 years and wanted to marry her. However, she had stopped responding to his calls and messages, leading him to suspect that she was involved with someone else. Acting out of anger and suspicion, he planned the attack.

In the early hours of August 15, 2019, Kuldeep entered a paying guest accommodation in Sector 22 through the rear door while the sisters were asleep. He began checking Manpreet’s mobile phone, which woke her up. When she raised an alarm, Kuldeep attacked her with a broken pair of scissors lying in the room.

Hearing the commotion, Rajwant Kaur woke up and tried to intervene, repeatedly pleading with him to spare her sister. However, Kuldeep also stabbed Rajwant multiple times. Both sisters died on the spot.

The court, while pronouncing the sentence, observed that the crime was brutal and showed extreme disregard for human life.
