Chandigarh: Police personnel in the city will now be allowed to stop motorists only for traffic violations. Director General of Police Dr. Sagar Preet Hooda has instructed that drivers should not be stopped without reason, especially vehicles carrying families.
The directive comes after several videos went viral on social media showing policemen allegedly harassing motorists at checkpoints.
The DGP said the move is aimed at improving the image of Chandigarh Police.
Along with the new instructions, the use of manual challans has also been banned. Traffic penalties will now be issued only through CCTV cameras.
