Ludhiana: A bloody clash broke out between two rival gangs lodged in Ludhiana Central Jail late on Tuesday night following an altercation earlier in the day. The district police have registered an FIR against 22 prisoners in connection with the incident.
According to the police, a fight first took place between inmates during the day, after which the jail superintendent placed one of the prisoners in the punishment ward. In the evening, while the inmate was being shifted back to his barrack, he allegedly provoked other prisoners and attacked jail personnel.
The FIR has been registered against 21 inmates and a constable for allegedly assaulting Jail Superintendent Kulwant Singh and other staff. Earlier, Police Commissioner Swapan Sharma had said that an FIR would be registered against 24 prisoners. However, 22 names have been included in the case so far.
As per the FIR, the accused have been identified as Sunil Kumar Nata, Bikramjit Singh, Shivkaran, Manpreet Singh, Charandeep Singh, Ranjodh Singh, Ishar Singh, Baljeet Singh, Sunil Kumar, Ubaid Masih, Sandeep Singh, Lovepreet Singh, Rajat Kumar, Gurvinder Singh, Rohit Singh, Karan Singh, Sandeep, Jaspreet Singh, Mandeep Singh, Pankaj, Parminder Singh and undertrial Maninder Singh.
Police said that when the jail superintendent and additional police force reached the spot, the inmates uprooted bricks from the jail’s prison wards and started pelting them. One prisoner allegedly hit Kulwant Singh on the head with a brick.
DSP Jagjit Singh and three other policemen were injured in the attack and were admitted to a private hospital where they are undergoing treatment. A case has been registered at Division Number Seven police station.
Sources said the clash began after two inmates, Teji and Karan, allegedly got into an argument with members of another group over staring at each other. Both groups are lodged in jail in connection with murder cases and share an old rivalry.
