Mumbai: A Class VI student of a private school in Maharashtra’s Palghar district died nearly a week after she was allegedly forced to do 100 sit-ups as punishment for reaching school late, officials said.
The student, identified as Anshika, studied at a school in Satiwali in the Vasai area. She died at a Mumbai hospital on Friday night.
Members of the Maharashtra Navnirman Sena (MNS) alleged that Anshika and four other students were asked to do 100 sit-ups each on November 8. Vasai MNS leader Sachin More said the girl was punished despite suffering from health issues.
A teacher from the school said the exact number of sit-ups she performed was unclear and added that it was not yet confirmed whether her death was linked to the punishment or due to any other medical reason.
Police and education authorities have launched an investigation into the incident.
