Chandigarh: Serious allegations have surfaced regarding the use of derogatory language against SC/ST communities in Punjabi textbooks being used in schools across Punjab, Haryana, Delhi and other states.
According to a press note, the books—published by Amardeep Publications/Pacemaker Publications, Jalandhar–Delhi—are reportedly being used in several schools, including those affiliated with DAV institutions.
The textbooks, written by Bhupinder Kaur and Dr Amritjeet Kaur for classes ranging from pre-nursery to Class 8, have been published under different titles such as “Navi Nuhar”, “Navi Nuhar DAV”, “Nikunj” and “Nirmolak”. The complaint alleges that the content includes material that could hurt the sentiments of specific communities.
Questions have also been raised over the publication process, with claims that identical content has been released under multiple brand names without complete publisher details, indicating lack of transparency and accountability.
The issue gains further significance in light of CBSE guidelines (Circular No. 12/2024), which clearly state that textbooks must not contain content that hurts sentiments of any class, community, gender or religion. Schools are required to thoroughly review books before approval, the note said.
A formal complaint has been submitted against the publishers, authors and associated institutions, including DAV College Managing Committee, New Delhi. Authorities including the Punjab Chief Minister, education departments, SC/ST commissions, CBSE, district administration and police have been urged to take action.
Complainants have demanded a ban on the publishers, withdrawal of the books, accountability of those involved and registration of an FIR in the matter.
