New Delhi: CP Radhakrishnan, the NDA candidate, was elected as the 15th Vice President of India, securing 452 first-preference votes. His opponent, Sudarshan Reddy of the INDIA alliance, received 300 first-preference votes, giving Radhakrishnan a winning margin of 152 votes.
The Congress had claimed the support of 315 MPs for the INDIA candidate, falling short by 15 votes. Notably, the BRS and BJD did not participate in the election, with the BRS having four MPs and BJD seven MPs in the Rajya Sabha.
The Shiromani Akali Dal’s lone Lok Sabha MP also abstained from voting, citing the ongoing floods in Punjab.
The election followed the sudden resignation of Vice President Jagdeep Dhankhar on July 21, citing ill health. His term was due to end on August 10, 2027.
