Delhi High Court sets aside CIC order on PM Modi’s degree disclosure

New Delhi: The Delhi High Court on Monday set aside a Central Information Commission (CIC) order directing Delhi University to disclose Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s bachelor’s degree details.

Justice Sachin Dutta, who had reserved the verdict on February 27, pronounced the judgment on a plea filed by Delhi University challenging the CIC directive.

The CIC had, on December 21, 2016, allowed scrutiny of records of all students who cleared the BA examination in 1978, the year PM Modi is said to have graduated. The order came after an RTI application filed by a person named Neeraj.

However, the high court had stayed the CIC order on January 23, 2017. Solicitor General Tushar Mehta, representing Delhi University, argued that the CIC order should be quashed, though the university had no objection to presenting records before the court.

The university maintained that personal information cannot be sought under the Right to Information Act in the absence of a larger public interest.
