New Delhi: The Election Commission of India will announce the schedule for assembly elections in five states on Sunday evening. The commission has called a press conference at 4 pm to reveal the detailed poll programme for West Bengal, Kerala, Tamil Nadu, Assam and the Union Territory of Puducherry.
The tenure of the assemblies in these states is set to end in May and June, prompting the commission to begin the process for electing new governments.
With the announcement of the election schedule, the Model Code of Conduct will come into immediate effect in the concerned states. The commission has already completed the special revision of electoral rolls and published the final voter lists ahead of the elections.
Political observers believe the assembly elections in West Bengal are likely to be closely contested and may be held in multiple phases. The announcement is expected to trigger intense political activity across the country.
