ECI slams ‘vote theft’ allegations in Bihar as an ‘insult to India’s Constitution’

New Delhi: The Election Commission of India (ECI) on Monday hit back at Congress leader Rahul Gandhi’s allegations of “vote theft” in Bihar, calling them an “insult to India’s Constitution.”

Chief Election Commissioner Gyanesh Kumar said the poll body works with complete impartiality and treats all political parties equally. “Every political party is born out of registration with the Election Commission, then how can the Commission discriminate? For us, there is no ruling party or opposition, all are equal,” Kumar said.

He urged political parties to identify and flag errors in the draft voter rolls of Bihar before September 1, instead of casting aspersions on the electoral process. The CEC added that almost all political parties have been demanding corrections in voter lists for the past two decades, which led the ECI to initiate a special comprehensive revision (SIR) in Bihar.

Warning Rahul Gandhi, Kumar said that if he fails to substantiate his allegations within seven days, his claims will be deemed baseless and he will be expected to apologise to the people of the country.
