ED summons Capt Amarinder Singh in FEMA case, appearance uncertain amid hospitalisation

Chandigarh: Former Punjab chief minister and senior BJP leader Capt Amarinder Singh has been summoned by the Enforcement Directorate (ED) in connection with an alleged violation of the Foreign Exchange Management Act (FEMA).

The ED’s Jalandhar office has asked Amarinder to appear on February 12. However, his appearance is considered unlikely as he is currently hospitalised following knee surgery.

Sources in the agency said no formal request seeking exemption from personal appearance had been received so far.

The case is said to be linked to an earlier probe involving Amarinder’s son, Raninder Singh. He had previously been questioned in connection with alleged irregularities related to funds in Switzerland and the formation of the ‘Jacaranda Trust’. According to an Income Tax Department investigation, certain overseas assets were allegedly created without proper disclosure.

The development has sparked political reactions, as Amarinder has recently been active in state politics and had openly backed a possible BJP–Shiromani Akali Dal alliance.
