Education Minister Bains orders FIR against Amritsar school management after student’s suicide

Amritsar: The Punjab Education Department has taken serious note of the suicide of a 17-year-old school student in Amritsar, who allegedly accused her school management of mental harassment over unpaid fees before her death.

Punjab Education Minister Harjot Singh Bains said the government has ordered strict action in the case and an FIR has been registered under charges related to abetment of suicide.

In a statement posted on social media platform X, Bains described the incident as deeply tragic and said the government was treating the matter with utmost seriousness. He stated that legal action had been initiated against school authorities and any other individuals found responsible during the investigation.

The Class 12 student had allegedly consumed a poisonous substance and later died during treatment at a hospital. Before her death, she recorded a video in which she claimed that she had been subjected to mental pressure by school authorities over the payment of pending fees.

The deceased was identified as Amjot Kaur Aulakh, a student of a private school in Amritsar. Family members alleged that she had been repeatedly pressured by members of the school administration, including the principal, to clear outstanding school dues amounting to ₹20,000.

According to the family, the repeated demands for payment left the student distressed and humiliated, adversely affecting her mental well-being.

Police have launched an investigation into the allegations, while the Education Department has assured that strict action will be taken against anyone found guilty. Officials said the probe will examine all aspects of the case, including the circumstances that allegedly led to the student’s death.
