KATHMANDU: At least eight inmates have been killed in clashes with security forces in Nepal, officials said on Thursday. The violence erupted during anti-government protests that have triggered chaos across the country.
More than 15,000 prisoners escaped from over two dozen jails following the unrest. Earlier reports confirmed the deaths of three inmates, but the toll later rose to eight.
The agitation began after protests against Prime Minister K.P. Sharma Oli, who resigned on Tuesday. In the wake of the escalating law and order crisis, the Nepali Army has imposed restrictions across several regions to restore control.
