Manchester: England made a fast-paced start in the fourth Test of the Anderson-Tendulkar Trophy at Old Trafford, reaching 225 for 2 at stumps on the second day in reply to India’s 358.
England openers Zak Crawley and Ben Duckett stitched a 166-run partnership in just 32 overs, making it seem like an ODI, before Ravindra Jadeja broke the stand by dismissing Crawley for 84 off 113 balls.
Duckett, who scored 94, fell to debutant Anshul Kamboj with the score at 197. Ollie Pope remained unbeaten on 20 alongside Joe Root, who was on 11, as England trailed by 133 runs at the close of play.
Earlier, India’s innings was powered by three half-centuries from Sai Sudarshan (61), Yashasvi Jaiswal (58) and Rishabh Pant (54).
All-rounder Shardul Thakur added a valuable 41 runs. Pant, who had retired hurt on 37 due to injury on the first day, returned to bat and played a courageous knock while limping, drawing praise for his determination.
England captain Ben Stokes, who opted to bowl after winning the toss, led the attack with figures of 5 for 72. Jofra Archer claimed three wickets, while Chris Woakes and Liam Dawson took one each.
