Ex-serviceman alleges assault by Punjab Police ASI over family dispute in Gurdaspur

Chandigarh: A shocking case of police brutality has surfaced from Jagatpur Khurd village in Gurdaspur district, where an assistant sub-inspector (ASI) of Punjab Police allegedly assaulted an ex-serviceman, Gurnam Singh, over a domestic dispute.

According to Gurnam Singh, the ASI forcibly picked him up from his house, tied his hands behind his back, and kept him in a police vehicle for nearly five hours, during which he was allegedly beaten repeatedly. The incident occurred under the jurisdiction of the Purana Shala police station.

The ex-serviceman claimed that the ASI is allegedly in a relationship with his daughter-in-law, Gurmeet Kaur. Singh said a minor argument had taken place between him and his daughter-in-law, following which the ASI, accompanied by another policeman, entered his house and began thrashing him without listening to his side.

When the village sarpanch and several women from the neighbourhood tried to intervene, the ASI allegedly pushed them aside. The officer then tied Gurnam Singh’s hands, threw him into a government vehicle, and drove him around before taking him to the Purana Shala police station, where his family members were present. His hands were later untied in front of the station house officer (SHO).

Gurnam Singh said there was no complaint filed against him and demanded strict action against the officer involved. He also alleged that a woman had called emergency helpline number 112 and mentioned his daughter-in-law’s name during the incident.

Police authorities have yet to issue an official statement on the matter.
