Chandigarh: An ex-serviceman shot dead his wife and mother-in-law at Khuthi village under Dorangla police station in the early hours of Saturday, before taking his own life after being cornered by police.
The accused, Bir Singh, who was working as a guard at Central Jail Gurdaspur on behalf of PESCO Company, allegedly killed his wife Akwinder Kaur (32) and mother-in-law Gurjit Kaur (55). He then fled to his flat at Scheme No. 7 of the Gurdaspur Improvement Trust.
Following the incident, SSP Gurdaspur Aditya arrived at the spot with a police team and surrounded the flat, urging Bir Singh to surrender. However, he shot himself in the head with an AK-47 rifle.
According to officials, Bir Singh had been in a prolonged dispute with his wife and the matter was already in court. Akwinder Kaur had been living with her mother in Khuthi village for a long time.
Police said an investigation is underway to determine how Bir Singh acquired the AK-47 rifle.
