Chandigarh: A 55-year-old man in Gurdaspur allegedly died by suicide after being deeply traumatised by the public assault and humiliation of his son during a wedding-related dispute, police said on Wednesday.
The incident occurred on February 2 in the Onkar Nagar locality of Gurdaspur. According to police and family members, a wedding ceremony was underway at the house of an influential local family near the victim’s residence. The man’s son was returning home in an e-rickshaw and, finding the road blocked due to parked vehicles, requested the wedding hosts to move their cars.
This reportedly enraged the family members, who allegedly assaulted the youth severely. When the father, Rajinder Kumar, rushed to the spot after being informed, he pleaded with the attackers to spare his son. However, the assailants allegedly continued beating the son in front of him and also humiliated both of them publicly.
Shocked and distressed by the incident, Rajinder Kumar returned home and allegedly consumed poison. He was later declared dead. CCTV footage of the assault on the son has also surfaced.
Police said the incident took place on February 2, but the post-mortem could not be conducted on February 3 as the family’s statements were not recorded that day. After statements were recorded on February 4, the post-mortem was carried out.
City police have registered a case against four accused persons and initiated an investigation. Officials said further action will be taken based on the probe and examination of CCTV footage.
