Amritsar: Fazilka Senior Superintendent of Police (SSP) Gurmeet Singh on Thursday appeared before the secretariat of Sri Akal Takht Sahib and sought forgiveness for a recent police action carried out inside the parikrama of Sachkhand Sri Darbar Sahib without prior permission from the management.
The development comes days after personnel from the Fazilka police allegedly entered the parikrama and detained two individuals without approval from the shrine authorities, triggering concern among the Sikh community.
SSP Gurmeet Singh met Jathedar Giani Kuldeep Singh Gargaj at the secretariat and presented his clarification regarding the incident. He also expressed regret over the lapse.
Speaking to the media, Jathedar Gargaj said Sri Darbar Sahib is the central religious shrine of the Sikhs and conveys the message of universal brotherhood to the world. “The four doors of the shrine remain open for people of all faiths who come here with devotion,” he said.
He added that the SSP has been asked to submit his explanation in writing as well. “He has acknowledged that the manner in which five police personnel from his district entered the parikrama was inappropriate. The police have assured that such an incident will not recur in future,” the Jathedar said.
He stressed that nothing should be allowed to disturb the sanctity of Sri Darbar Sahib or hurt the sentiments of the devotees.
