Malian: A Malian court has sentenced former Prime Minister Moussa Mara to two years in prison for criticising the country’s military regime in a social media post.
Mara had accused the military rulers of abandoning democracy in the West African nation, his lawyer said on Monday.
Mara, one of the few public figures who openly questioned the leadership of Colonel Assimi Goita, was also fined $887.10. Goita had earlier this year dissolved political parties and extended his rule by five years without holding elections.
Mali’s government has not commented on the verdict, while prosecution lawyers could not be reached for comment.
