New Delhi: Senior Congress leader, former Union minister and former Punjab governor Shivraj Patil passed away on Friday at his residence in Latur district of Maharashtra. He was 90.
Family sources said Patil had been ailing for some time and breathed his last at his residence ‘Deoghar’ after a brief illness.
A veteran Congress leader, Patil held several key constitutional and ministerial positions during his long political career. He served as the Union Home Minister from 2004 to 2008 and was the 10th Speaker of the Lok Sabha from 1991 to 1996. He also served as the Governor of Punjab and Administrator of the Union Territory of Chandigarh from 2010 to 2015.
Born on October 12, 1935, Patil began his political journey as the head of the Municipal Council of Latur before being elected as an MLA in the early 1970s. He later went on to represent the Latur Lok Sabha constituency seven times.
In the 2004 Lok Sabha elections, Patil lost from Latur to BJP candidate Rupatai Patil Nilangekar.
He is survived by his son Shailesh Patil, daughter-in-law Archana, who is a BJP leader and two granddaughters.
