Former Punjab Police DIG Harcharan Singh Bhullar’s bail plea rejected in corruption case

Chandigarh: A CBI court has rejected the bail application filed by former Punjab Police DIG Harcharan Singh Bhullar who was arrested in a corruption case. The matter was heard on Friday at the CBI special court in Chandigarh.

During the previous hearing, the court had directed both sides to file their replies. On Tuesday, counsels for both parties presented their arguments. Bhullar’s lawyer argued that documents related to the alleged bribe amount were contradictory and raised doubts about the prosecution’s case.

The Central Bureau of Investigation had arrested Bhullar and his alleged aide Krishanu Sharda on October 16, 2025 on charges of demanding a bribe from a complainant. The CBI had received a complaint on October 11 from Akash Batta, a resident of Mandi Gobindgarh in Fatehgarh Sahib district.

The complaint alleged that Bhullar, through middleman Sharda, had demanded a bribe in 2023 to settle an FIR registered against the complainant at Sirhind police station.

After conducting a preliminary inquiry, the CBI arrested both accused along with the alleged bribe money. Bhullar’s counsel, SPS Bhullar, said that the charge sheet had already been filed and the investigation was complete. He said the accused could not influence witnesses and therefore deserved bail.

Opposing the plea, public prosecutor Narinder Singh said that granting bail could lead to the accused influencing witnesses. After hearing both sides, the court rejected the bail application.

Bhullar had earlier approached the Supreme Court seeking interim bail and a stay on the CBI proceedings but the apex court did not grant relief. He is currently lodged in Burail Jail in Chandigarh under judicial custody.
