Patna: Gangster Chandan Mishra was shot dead by five armed men at Paras Hospital in Patna on Thursday while he was admitted to the ICU, police said.

Mishra, who was currently on parole, sustained multiple bullet injuries and died during treatment.

The attackers entered the hospital with ease, went to Mishra’s cabin, opened fire, and fled within minutes, police said. CCTV footage of the incident has raised concerns over the deteriorating law and order situation in Bihar and the safety of citizens.

Mishra, a resident of Buxar district, was facing several criminal cases. Senior Superintendent of Police Kartikey Sharma said the initial investigation points towards the involvement of the Chandan Sheru gang.

“We are working closely with the Buxar police to identify and track down the attackers,” Sharma said, adding that police are also investigating possible involvement of hospital staff or security personnel in the attack.

The broad daylight killing inside a private hospital has triggered public outrage, with many criticising the state government’s handling of crime. In recent weeks, Patna has witnessed several high-profile murders, including those of businessman Gopal Khemka, BJP leader Surendra Kewat, and lawyer Jitendra Mahto.

Rashtriya Janata Dal leader Tejashwi Yadav said, “Armed men entered the ICU and shot a patient. Is anyone safe anywhere in Bihar today? This was not the case before 2005.”

Deputy Chief Minister Vijay Sinha termed the incident as “very unfortunate” and assured immediate action.
