Mohali: Punjab Police are investigating the angle of corruption and ransom behind the murder of Kunwar Digvijay Singh alias Rana Balachauria, who was shot dead during a Kabaddi event near Sohana in Mohali.
The police said the murder was masterminded by Portugal-based gangster Balwinder Singh alias Doni Bal, a native of the Amritsar area. The execution of the crime was allegedly carried out by gang members from the same region.
DGP (Law and Order) Arpit Shukla said the involvement of Doni Bal in the murder has been established during the investigation. He said the gangster operates from abroad and is involved in intimidating people and extorting money. Several criminal cases, including incidents of firing linked to extortion demands, have been registered against him.
Police officials said Doni Bal has primarily targeted businessmen and individuals associated with the music industry. Rana Balachauria was also running a music studio in Mohali.
According to the investigation so far, shooters Aditya Kapoor and Karan Pathak were arranged by Doni Bal from Portugal and were provided weapons in the Amritsar area. Police teams are conducting raids in Amritsar and Batala to arrest the accused involved in the conspiracy.
Mohali SSP Harmandeep Singh Hans said a local associate has also been identified for providing logistical support to the shooters. He said the police are closely monitoring the suspect and collecting evidence to establish his role in the case.
