Government says swift action helped stabilise IndiGo operations, fare caps introduced

NEW DELHI: The government on Tuesday said it acted without delay to address the widespread disruption caused by IndiGo’s recent operational crisis, asserting that coordinated efforts with airlines and airports helped stabilise the situation.

Civil Aviation Secretary Sameer Kumar Sinha said the ministry intervened promptly after the crisis emerged and initiated consultations with all stakeholders to reduce inconvenience to passengers.

“On December 3, when we came to know, we immediately held meetings and after that we coordinated with airlines and other airlines at airports and everything has gone smoothly since then,” Sinha said. He added that recovery in operations had been “very rapid”.

To protect passengers from sudden spikes in airfare, the government has also implemented temporary fare caps. According to Sinha, ticket prices have now been fixed between ₹7,500 for sectors up to 500 km and ₹18,000 for routes above 1,500 km.

The ministry said it will continue monitoring airline operations closely to ensure that passengers do not face further disruptions.
