Chandigarh: BPL families in Haryana will now have to pay Rs 100 for 2 litres of mustard oil every month, up from the earlier price of Rs 40, marking a two-and-a-half-fold increase.
The new rates will come into effect from this month, according to an order issued by the Food and Supplies Department on Tuesday.
There are 46,43,257 BPL families in the state who receive ration under the scheme. In Sonipat district, ration is distributed through 471 depots, from where around four lakh litres of mustard oil are distributed to BPL families every month.
The Food and Supplies Department has attributed the price hike to the rising market rates of mustard oil.
Sonipat District Food and Supplies Controller Vishal Sehrawat said, “The market rate of mustard is very high. That is why the rates have been increased by the department. The department is fully alert to ensure that consumers do not suffer.”
Trilok Jain, a ration depot holder in Sonipat, said that the rates have been changed as per instructions from the headquarters, but it will increase the financial burden on consumers.
