Haryana government holds talks with family of late IPS officer Y Puran Kumar; new details emerge in case

Chandigarh: The Haryana government is making every effort to convince the family of senior IPS officer Y Puran Kumar, who died by suicide on October 7 at his residence in Sector 11, Chandigarh. On Sunday morning, two senior IAS officers held a meeting with his wife, IAS officer Amneet P Kumar, at her residence in the same sector.

Chandigarh SSP Kanwardeep Kaur also visited Amneet P Kumar’s government residence in Sector 24 with some official documents.

Meanwhile, a photograph from the scene of the suicide surfaced five days after the incident. It shows Puran Kumar’s body lying on a sofa in the soundproof basement room of Kothi No. 116, Sector 11. Blood can be seen coming from his head, nose, and mouth, and his T-shirt appears stained with blood. He is seen holding a pistol in his right hand and covered with a blanket.

In a new development, Chandigarh Police has amended the charge under the SC/ST Act in the case. Section 3(1)(r) has been replaced with Section 3(2)(v), which carries a provision for life imprisonment and fine. Earlier, Section 3(1)(r) provided for imprisonment of up to five years and a fine.

Meanwhile, the family and organizations representing the Scheduled Caste community have announced a Mahapanchayat at Guru Ravidas Gurudwara in Sector 20, Chandigarh, at 2 pm today.
