Chandigarh: Haryana Chief Minister Nayab Saini has increased the financial assistance given under the Chief Minister’s Marriage Shagun Yojana to Rs 51,000 for the marriage of daughters of poor and needy families, up from the earlier amount of Rs 41,000.

The decision will directly benefit around 16.65 lakh families in the state with an annual income of up to Rs 1.80 lakh.

An official spokesman said the scheme aims to provide assistance in the marriage of girls belonging to economically weaker sections.

The increased amount will be given for ‘Kanyadan’ to daughters of backward class families living below the poverty line, women sportspersons of any category, and couples where either of the spouses is disabled.

To avail the scheme, it will be mandatory for eligible applicants to register the marriage within six months. Families can apply online for the Shagun scheme at shadi.edisha.gov.in.
