Chandigarh: The Punjab and Haryana High Court has directed the Punjab government and the CBI to provide security to scrap dealer Akash Batta, who had filed a petition citing threats to his life.
Batta had lodged a complaint against DIG Harcharan Singh Bhullar of the Ropar Range for allegedly demanding a bribe.
The petition was heard on Friday, following the arrest of DIG Bhullar by the CBI on Thursday (October 16) from his Mohali office in a bribery case. According to reports, the DIG, through a middleman, had demanded an Rs 8 lakh bribe from Batta.
The CBI orchestrated a trap, and as Bhullar accepted the bribe at his office, he was immediately arrested and taken to a secret location.
Simultaneously, CBI teams from Chandigarh and Delhi conducted raids at the DIG’s Sector 40 bungalow. Officials recovered over Rs 5 crore in cash, 1.5 kg of gold ornaments, luxury watches, cars, property documents, a pistol and revolver, and foreign liquor.
