High Court questions Tribune flyover project in Chandigarh

CHANDIGARH: The Punjab and Haryana High Court on Tuesday questioned the proposal to construct the Tribune flyover, noting that the master plan of Chandigarh, the City Beautiful, contains no provision for such a structure.

A bench headed by Chief Justice Sheel Nagoo asked the UT administration why a flyover project was being pursued despite its absence in the city’s master plan.

The bench also sought clarification on whether the master plan had been properly notified and if the correct procedure was followed for any amendments.

Advocate Tanu Bedi responded that the Chandigarh master plan was notified in 2015 following the intervention of the high court and has never been revised.

Bedi added that Chandigarh was not designed as a typical metro city for luxury vehicles but for slow-moving traffic, bicycles, and pedestrians. He noted that public transport, cycling, and pedestrian movement have been prioritised in the city’s design, but heavy traffic is causing congestion in several areas.
