New Delhi: People’s Democratic Party (PDP) leader Iltija Mufti has termed Bihar Chief Minister Nitish Kumar’s alleged act of removing a Muslim woman’s hijab during a public event as “shameful” and humiliating.
Talking to reporters in Srinagar, Iltija Mufti said that while Nitish Kumar is respected as a senior leader, such behaviour was unacceptable. “On one hand, you are giving a degree to a woman and on the other, you are removing her purta in public. This is a very bad act,” she said.
She questioned how people would react if a similar act were done to a Hindu woman. “How would a Hindu woman feel if her ghungat was removed like this in public?” she asked.
The PDP leader also criticised leaders who laughed at the incident, particularly Bihar’s Deputy Chief Minister from the BJP, saying they treated the matter like a joke. “Being the chief minister does not give anyone the right to humiliate a Muslim woman,” she said.
Warning against repetition of such incidents, Iltija Mufti said, “If such an act happens again, we will not remain silent.” She further urged the Bihar government to appoint a new chief minister, claiming that Nitish Kumar no longer appeared capable of handling the responsibilities of the office due to age and health concerns.
