Chandigarh: The Punjab Vidhan Sabha on Tuesday decided to constitute a committee to probe the disappearance of the Action Taken Report in the 1986 Nakodar incident case.
Finance Minister Harpal Singh Cheema told the House that while a part of the Nakodar incident report submitted by Justice Gurnam Singh was available on record, the second part, which contained the Action Taken Report, had gone missing.
Cheema said there was a deep-rooted conspiracy behind the disappearance, warranting the formation of a committee to investigate the matter.
With the consent of the House, the Speaker announced the formation of the committee.
In 1986, an incident of sacrilege of Sri Guru Granth Sahib Ji had triggered protests, during which four youths were killed in police firing.
Meanwhile, Congress MLA Sukhpal Singh Khaira raised concerns in the House about 20 police encounters that have taken place in Punjab in the last seven months.
