Chandigarh: A woman was allegedly murdered by her husband at a hotel in Amritsar, Punjab, with her body being recovered from the hotel room on Monday afternoon, police said.
The deceased, identified as Prabhjot Kaur, was an NRI who had arrived from Austria about a week ago along with her husband to attend a family function. Hotel staff grew suspicious after the man failed to return to the room for several hours and there was no movement inside. After repeated knocks went unanswered, the hotel management alerted the police, who broke open the door.
During the investigation, police found the woman’s body lying under the bed. She had sustained multiple sharp-edged injuries on her abdomen, neck and other parts of the body. The victim’s brother alleged that the husband killed her due to suspicion over her character.
The couple has a six-month-old son. According to the brother, the accused had left the house the previous night saying they were going out, but did not take the child along. The family later learned about the murder.
The accused husband has fled from the hotel and remains absconding. As his entire family resides abroad, police suspect that he may attempt to flee the country. A case of murder has been registered following the post-mortem examination of the body.
Police said Prabhjot Kaur was originally from Gurdaspur district, while her marriage took place in Amritsar. Teams of the Punjab Police are currently conducting raids to trace and arrest the accused.
