New Delhi: India registered a 59-run victory over Sri Lanka in the opening match of the ICC Women’s World Cup in Guwahati on Tuesday.
Put in to bat after Sri Lanka won the toss, India posted 269 for 8 in 47 overs. The innings was reduced by three overs due to rain interruptions. Deepti Sharma (53) and Amanjot Kaur (57) led the recovery after India were struggling at 124 for 6, stitching a crucial partnership that pushed the total past 250. For Sri Lanka, Inoka Ranaweera was the most successful bowler, picking up four wickets.
In reply, Sri Lanka were bowled out for 211 in 45.4 overs. Their first breakthrough came when Hasani Perera, who scored 14 runs, was clean-bowled by Kranthi. The wickets continued to tumble, and India sealed the win comfortably. Deepti Sharma shone with the ball as well, finishing with three wickets.
The match also saw a milestone for Sri Lanka skipper Chamari Attapattu, who led the side in her 59th ODI, surpassing Sasikala Siriwardene’s record for most matches as Sri Lanka’s captain.
