India emerging as strong voice of Global South as world moves towards new global order: PM Modi in Rajya Sabha

New Delhi: Prime Minister Narendra Modi on Thursday said the world is moving towards a new global order and asserted that India has emerged as a strong and influential voice of the Global South.

Replying to the debate on the President’s Address in the Rajya Sabha, the prime minister said the global system formed after the Second World War is undergoing a major transformation, especially in the post-Covid-19 era.

“It is clear that the world is moving towards a new global order. After the Second World War, a global system was established. Now the world is changing again,” Modi said. “If we analyse this independently, the tilt is clearly towards India.”

Modi began his address amid slogans by opposition parties, who were protesting disruptions in the Lok Sabha and demanding that the Leader of the Opposition be allowed to speak. Taking a swipe at Rajya Sabha Leader of the Opposition Mallikarjun Kharge, Modi remarked that opposition members could continue raising slogans while seated. Following the comment, opposition MPs staged a walkout from the House.

The prime minister said global attention has increasingly shifted towards the Global South, with India playing a central role. “Today, the world is talking about the Global South, and India is its strong voice,” he said.

Modi also highlighted India’s growing engagement in international trade, referring to multiple trade agreements signed in recent times. “We are entering into future-ready trade agreements with several countries. In the past few days, we have concluded nine major trade deals, the most significant among them being with the European Union,” he said.

The prime minister’s remarks came amid continued political friction in Parliament, with repeated disruptions and walkouts by opposition parties over procedural and political issues.
