New Delhi: Prime Minister Narendra Modi on Thursday asserted that India would never compromise on the interests of its farmers, fishermen and dairy farmers, even if it came at a personal cost.
“For us, the interest of farmers is the topmost priority. India will never compromise with the interests of farmers, fishermen and dairy farmers. I believe that, personally, I will have to pay the price for it, and I am ready for it,” PM Modi said.
He was addressing a three-day Global Conference held to mark the birth centenary of renowned agricultural scientist M.S. Swaminathan. Modi’s remarks come in the wake of the United States announcing a hike in tariffs on Indian imports — including agricultural products — by up to 50 per cent.
During the event, the Prime Minister also released a commemorative coin and postage stamp in honour of M.S. Swaminathan, who is credited with leading India’s Green Revolution.
