India will not tolerate interference in its internal affairs, says BJP after New York City mayor’s note for Umar Khalid

New Delhi: The BJP on Friday said that India will not tolerate any interference in its internal affairs after New York City Mayor Zohran Mamdani wrote a note in support of jailed activist Umar Khalid.

BJP national spokesperson Gaurav Bhatia warned the New York City mayor against making such attempts and accused him of interfering in India’s internal matters by writing a note for Khalid. He said India would not tolerate any such move.

Bhatia said that if India’s sovereignty is challenged, 1.4 billion Indians will stand united under the leadership of PM Modi. He added that the people of India have complete faith in the country’s judiciary.

Earlier, Mamdani wrote a note addressed to Khalid saying, “Dear Umar, I often think about your words on bitterness. It was good to meet your parents. We are all thinking of you. When prisons try to isolate, words speak volumes.”

Reacting to this, Bhatia said, “If anyone comes out in support of an accused and interferes in India’s internal affairs, the country will not tolerate it.”

The BJP spokesperson said, “Who is this outsider questioning our democracy and judiciary and that too while supporting a person who wants to break India? This is not justified.”

It is worth noting that Umar Khalid and several others were booked under the stringent Unlawful Activities (Prevention) Act (UAPA), 1967, and provisions of the IPC for allegedly being the masterminds behind the February 2020 Delhi riots. As many as 53 people were killed and over 700 were injured in the violence.
