New Delhi: The Indian High Commission in Ottawa has issued an advisory for the Indian community in Canada, cautioning them against fraudulent calls and emails related to visa, immigration status and job offers.
According to the advisory, several Indian nationals and persons of Indian origin, particularly international students, have reported receiving calls and emails from unidentified elements falsely accusing them of crimes or fraud and demanding payment of application or legal fees.
The High Commission said that in many cases, the callers or email senders have falsely claimed to be officials from the High Commission in Ottawa or from the Consulate General of India in Toronto and Vancouver.
It added that these elements have also used spoofed phone numbers that appear to match official numbers listed on the High Commission and Consulate websites, misleading recipients into believing the calls are genuine.
The advisory clarified that the High Commission in Ottawa and the Consulates in Toronto and Vancouver are not connected to any such matters and urged the Indian community to remain vigilant. Individuals receiving such calls have been advised to report the incidents to local law enforcement authorities.
In cases where the caller’s number is from India, complaints can be registered on the Indian cybercrime portal at https://www.cybercrime.gov.in.
