Connecticut: Indian-origin real estate tycoon Singh Swaranjit has been elected as the new mayor of Norwich in the US state of Connecticut, becoming the first Sikh to hold the position in the state’s history.
Democrat Swaranjit secured 3,978 votes, accounting for 57.25 percent of the total, while his Republican rival Stacey Gould received 2,828 votes, or 40.7 percent.
According to official election data, Swaranjit’s family migrated from India after the 1984 anti-Sikh riots.
He moved to the United States in 2007 and later established himself as a real estate businessman, also owning a gas station in Norwich.
